Exam Week

Life works in the most mysterious ways. Every time I venture out of my comfort zone, I get a little more accustomed to change, difference, independence and uncertainty. I've been picking up pace slowly. I feel slow now, this rate that I'm going.

When I was walking down Telegraph this morning, Queen's "I want to break free" was playing in my head. I pictured myself walking down Telegraph proclaiming to the world that it is time for me to break free. To watch, to learn, to live. It's cliche. But the feeling this morning was a different feeling - it wasn't just any "I want to go out and travel" kind of feeling. I don't know how to explain it.

The funny thing is that many things happened over the last 7 -10 days and there's a lot to write. But I'm lazy to put it in words. It will take so much thinking, and so much time to accurately put down what I'm thinking and feeling. And I know I'll risk chronologically arranging events instead of writing my reflections, and I'll become monotonous. What's the point then.

I'm tired. I need to go.

Joel's bday

Joel is going to arrive in 10 min.
I baked him a Betty Crocker Chocolate cake. If you know me well enough, you would know that I really really would have baked a cake from scratch. But I just don't have anything here in the apartment... I'm forced to go for the no-frills approach!!

My weekend

It's ironic- how much time I have for blogging because I have nothing else to do... which makes blogging pointless because there won't be anything to blog about!

Right now... I have plenty to say, and no time to write it all down!! But I promised myself to record everything wonderful so I'll make it quick. I had a great weekend with my new Couchsurfing friends Marina and Hasan. Marina and I went to the North Beach fest. We spent most of our time chilling on the grass, enjoying the cool breeze and sorching sun (yes, that's SF weather). Then at night we went to Ruby Skye which is a club on Mission Street that plays House music. I had a long day that Saturday and plus the hot sun and House music which I CANNOT appreciate, I fell asleep in the club. hahha
My first time clubbing in SF.. and I fell asleep. It obviously wasn't cool enough for my attention. lol.

Anyway, we started Sunday late since we got back late on Saturday. We headed to the mission district around 330pm for ice cream.... then we walked to Castro for me to get the tickets for the movie that Joel wants to watch on his bday... then we continued walking towards Haight. By the time we reached the legendary Haight and Ashbury cross roads, it was freezing and we were delirious. Take a look at the map and try to understand how much we walked that way.

Long walks up and down the hilly terrain. But it was an absolute joy to move from neighbourhood to neighbourhood and feel the change in atmosphere.

I don't have much time before Joel and Noshin arrives in Oakland... and I still have to pump the air mattress for them to sleep!!!!! Many things to do...
urm, also my last assignment for school. I almost forgot that. I am waiting for the video from the weekend to be uploaded onto fb. And then you'll be able to see more of my wonderful friends.

I'm going sky diving tomorrow... and Joel has many other things planned for his fab 25th Birthday so we'll be shagged. I hope I'll be able to find some time in between the fun to update this blog in the coming week!

Meanwhile, I hope you have a good week!
xo

ooo Updates.

I had a fabulous week. And next week will only get better cause Joel is coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back to my fabulous week. It's so fabulous cause I met a new friend, I made plans with my mexican classmate, and someone offered to take me around Berkeley after I complained that it's boring.

***
I went to San Francisco alone on Wednesday night. I was super excited cause I had stayed in Berkeley for almost 2 weeks. There was a couchsurfing gathering on Wednesday night in an Irish Pub in North Beach, a place I haven't been to before. Someone sent me an invite after I updated my profile last week. I was psyched. Why didn't I think of couchsurfing before???

I would say that the attendees for such an event would most likely be
  1. Open-minded
because they're on couch-surfing! Need I say more?
They know the people they meet that night will be people from diverse backgrounds and are attending it to learn about them!
  2. Not lazy
They made the effort to attend an event on Wednesday night. They didn't just hit the nearby bar.
  3. Interesting
Couch-surfing members may have hosted or surfed. They often have done a lot of travelling too. You'll have fantastic stories and experiences to listen to!
As it turned out, I met quite a few interesting people there but only exchanged contacts with 2 girls by the end of the night. One of them is Marina. She's this awesome Russian girl who has been living in US for 3 years. She moved all around the place and finally settled in NYC. And she's here for only 1 week. so yesterday the both of us went about doing touristy stuff... which was so so fun! We walked around without a plan but somehow managed to cover the famous landmarks; sat down in parks to chat and enjoy the views and the people around; and by the end of the day found ourselves in Fisherman's Wharf enjoying the sunset.

I feel that it's not easy finding someone to go around places with. Firstly, I don't exactly warm up very very quickly with strangers. Secondly, even if the stranger is very nice, if he/she is of a different frequency, I won't totally feel at home and enjoy myself while exploring. But I felt no such problems with Marina! She's just totally fun to hang out with and we talk about the more serious things about life ever si casually and we seem to agree on quite a lot of stuff. So yesterday was aweeeesome.

Marina and I at Coit Tower
The tower was build by eccentric millionaire Lillie Hitchcock Coit to honour firefighters and resemble a giant hose.
It's been a while since the last jump shot :)

Second reason for the awesome week
I made a date with my classmates! I'm going cycling tomorrow! I was supposed to go to Golden Gate Bridge tomorrow with John and Andrew but now John's going to Sacramento so it'll just be me and Andrew. So the week will probably be even more awesome after tomorrow :)

Third reason for the awesome week
I went to T-Mobile to add credit and guess who I met. Tony.
Tony. Tony. Tony. The guy Frank and I bought our Sim Cards from...
I was joking with Frank that the whole world seem to have visited Golden Gate Bridge and maybe I should ask Tony to go with me. Cause when we bought our sim cards from Tony, he mentioned that he hasn't even walked the bridge even though he is from here.
So anyway, he asked me how everything was going and I gave him my honest reply... that it was boring in berkeley. I saw his face change.
hahaaa.. he was like nooo there are many interesting places to go! He gave me his number and invited me to hang out with him and his friends. I thought about it and told him I'm up for anything fun tonight. So let's see where we'll go. A local friend is always good.

okay. enough blogging and stoning. Although I'd really really like to waste some time watching a movie.... I really should start on my readings. It's so sad. I wonder how much I'll finish today.

hmm I feel like eating chocolate cake.

5 benefits of living in the States

  1. People are more open
  2. People say "hi, how are you" all the time. I could do that daily.
  3. You can watch episodes on abc ALL the time.
  4. IN-N-OUT Burgers!!!
  5. They use dryers, dishwashers and they have machines for everything. lol

Okay, I have to admit point 3 inspired this post. Instead of doing my Dev Psych assignment, I am watching The Bachelorette. Ali is soooo beautiful. And I need to make a few comments that I absolutely can't keep to myself about the guys .
  1. Kasey. cute. very cute. Reminds me of John Corbett. Unfortunately, Kasey is psycho. Ali needs to get him out of the competition before he sings more cheesy songs and gets another tattoo. He keeps saying he is guarding her heart. And he knows she's the one for him. bet he doesn't even know who she is. I always can't understand how guys think that the girl can't see through that obvious lie.
  2. Chris is so so so so sweet. Love that deep manly voice. haha. And he's so affectionate towards his family.
  3. Jesse? Erin on Glamour Single-ish says that Ali is keeping Jesse around cause he's cute. I beg to differ.
  4. Jonathan the weatherman is I-N-T-E-N-S-E. relationship terms, that means scary.
  5. Kirk looks dangerous. Like play-boy dangerous. Like he's gonna play with the girl's heart.
I vote for Cape Cod Chris!

Lol. I'm lame.

up down and round and round. this makes no sense

Wei Wei is tired.
Wei Wei misses her mum and dad.
Wei Wei misses her friends.

Wei Wei is talking in third person.

***

We wrapped up mid terms today. It was open book, open discussion for our 45 MCQ questions today. That made it pretty fun. I guess the prof just wants to give us a reason to read the text and maybe she knows we won't remember the stuff in 6 months time even if we can memorize it for the exams now so she chooses to make the process more enjoyable for us. How sweet.

I got back my human sexuality mid term today. 85%. That's a B. A is 90-100. It's better than I expected already so I'm pretty happy. I guess there's less pressure on the finals, and I get to enjoy the last week of June more!

I'm writing this blog as I wait for my chicken to cook. I finally bought a bottle of Lee Kum Kee seasoning and cooked black bean chicken today. I cooked a huge container of cabbage to accompany that. Shall have that for lunch tomorrow. Decent Chinese food at last :)
Don't get me wrong, I love Beef stew... but I was getting sick of thyme and carrots.

I have been eating out a lot more and thus spending more money. It's so much more convenient... no need to cook, no need to plan... no need to shop for groceries! I had to drag my lazy ass out of the apartment to go to Andronico's (Tuesday-15% off!).

Along the way to Andronico's, 2 homeless guys along the road were pleading for me to give them a smile. So I did. And they said it was beautiful. That made me happy. And it probably gave them some satisfaction - that they could control a random girl, or that a random girl actually did smile at them. It made me remember the times when Evi and I would randomly talk about smiling at familiar faces. You walk round campus. You see a face. You know the face. He's/She's your coursemate. He/She almost ignores you all the time. Should you smile? I don't most of the time. But once or twice when I do, it totally makes my day. Because more often than not, the person responds. And I bet, I surprised the person and also made his/her day. So smile. It's free anyways:)

My room mate made cookies

Black bean Chicken.
Just tried it. De-lish

Mountain of cabbage, which i luveee

I bought this from Dollar tree. That's like our dollar shop.
I swear, all the homeless people go there. There's a smell there.
Anyways, it feels like there's nothing but salt in the pot pie. Awful.

Last night's dinner - Sushi

Humongous serving of tempura

Humongous serving of Udon

You know I love sitting on the grass right?

I was craving carrot cake to be exact. But I had tiramisu instead.

Lunch yesterday. Grilled Chicken with salad.

yes yes yes

YESSSSSS
I finished my 4 chapters at last. I can't take it anymore. I have to push essays till tomorrow. I'm going onto tudou for a nice movie now. lol. then go out and buy breakfast for tomorrow :)
I love that the sun sets way past 8pm now.

My uneventful weekend

Sean, Samuel and the sisters drove up to Yosemite for the weekend. I decided not to go to save money for LA and Vegas instead.. I love mountains and waterfalls but I guess I've seen enough in China. I have got to prioritise right? How many Vegas-es and Disneylands are there? haha

I was supposed to spend Friday and Saturday studying for my Dev Psychology so I can go out on Sunday. I wanted to go back to Golden Gate Park for the Academy of Sciences BUT I was not productive at all on Friday. Joel and I decided to go to Denver, Colorado in the last 2 days that I'll be in the States so I spent a good period of time updating my couchsurfing profile and we're gonna do couchsurfing! Noshin will be coming too and she had her reservations about sleeping in a stranger's home but Joel managed to convince her that they won't be psychos or perverts. In any case, I managed to get a few favourable responses over the last 2 days which is awesome! I wish I have a couch to offer when I return home but I live in my parents' home and I have to abide by their rules.

So Friday, I wasted away. Saturday, I did my second homework and went through 2 out of 6 chapters. So today I will have to write my essays and go through the rest of the 4 chapters. I went jogging yesterday! The weather was just sooo good. I think I jogged for like 20 minutes or less and walked 20 minutes. lol. Exercising doesn't work for me cause I end up rewarding myself right after burning the calories and I think I end up eating more.

By yesterday I was at home for 2 days. Like home without any interaction with anyone... except for my room mate Lisa. I haven't seen Yeji in like 3-4 days. I hope she hasn't been kidnapped. She hardly comes home, it's difficult for me to look out for her safety. But hell, I am the foreigner in this place. She should be fine.

I was ready to get out after 2 days of home. I wanted to contact Jon cause I thought he might be heading down to San Fran but I didn't have his mobile number! :( Pocket had dinner date with her dance friends... I messaged Frank and he suggested we just have some beer in his dorm room. omg, no! how boring. I managed to get him out to catch a movie, and he managed to get Justin and Ivanka to come along. We watched Get Him To The Greek. So effing funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then after that, Justin and Ivanka went back to study, and Frank and I went to meet Pocket. We went to Blakes. At last I managed to see the place. It sucks. It's practically empty. And the service is slow. And a scary looking man kept hey lady-ing me. He looked high. Probably from weed. The people here do it everywhere. I hate the smell of it. It kinda sucks here in the States... you HAVE to have your ID just to enter a bar. And of course, your ID has to show that you're above 21... and that gave Pocket some problems. I would have rather gone to Kip's after seeing Blakes but Kip's didn't even allow Pocket in.

Anyway, just for laughs...
Frank and I have come to an agreement. He says that the people here aren't very nice... like some of the girls have been quite bitchy. Come to think of it, maybe he's been approaching the really hot ones and they have the tendency to not give a shit about anyone since they're high in demand. When I was in Muse in Shanghai, there was a huge group of guys, and one woman who claimed that she is the wife of one of the guys. She came to talk to me, like woman-to-woman on behalf of one of the guys and I didn't have my guard up. Otherwise I would completely ignore guys in the club. They're always up to no good.

So what I learnt is... a man would do best with a wingwoman. lol. So I offered that to Frank. haha! I think I'd make an awesome wingwoman. and Frank's not an ass so I wouldn't mind helping him. I don't know how this will work out cause we hardly go out together and we're kinda running out of time. The bad thing about this is we have to go out in a group... like at least 2 more people otherwise everyone around us would think we're a couple hanging out. bleh. I would like Frank to be my wingman but he pointed out a guy with shaggy hair yesterday and gave me the cute guy alert. eww. I don't think I can trust his taste.

Perfect weather today

It's 18degrees. I wore a short skirt for the first time here. And it wasn't cold! How nice if it's like this everyday.

In response to the 4PM post

Sean very kindly shared this video with me after reading the earlier blog post. J.K. Rowling did a wonderful job in emphasizing the other important things in life. Enjoy :)

J.K. Rowling Speaks at Harvard Commencement from Harvard Magazine on Vimeo.

Looks are deceiving

I went to Andronico's on Tuesday cause they have 15% off for Cal students. But cause my human sexuality mid term was on wednesday, I waited until today to cook my 'week-long' batch of food. I'm back to pasta again. I'm getting better at it. I think.

Looks are deceiving. I hate to admit it but it looks damn awful. I'm having it for dinner now though and it tastes good. I used minced beef, onions, sausages, prego sauce, campbell soup and pepper. I put pepper into everything now. I guess it covers up any awful smell or taste. lol.

Now, on the other hand, this fried rice looks slightly nicer. It was my lunch for last sunday. It sucked. I fried it. The meat on the side, I bought from Asian Ghetto. I was complaining to Shane today that the Asians here DO NOT know how to cook. Hate it. Hate it. HATE IT. I miss Chinese food. :(

End of week 3 of school!

I'm halfway through session A.
That means 3 things
  1. Exams are coming. Need to pick up pace.
  2. Joel, Noshin and Tyler will come soon!!
  3. SKYDIVING is coming soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joel and I randomly text each other and we can't believe that we are only a text away from each other! That's the good thing about the telecommunication network here. There are no extra charges for calls between states. I think that's great... since US is so big. It really helps that the one same number will be treated the same all across the country.

Here's an excerpt of our text conversation:
me: I've been hoping for the last month that I'll meet someone random and we'll just click.
Joel: Why if you wouldn't stay anyways for fear of raising your children in America.
me: cause he'll feel the same way and we'll move away.
joel: you just need to accept that we'll all be living in SF raising all of our children.

lol. I think Joel will keep repeating that for the rest of my life. If ever, I really move to SF, he'll be like "You seeeeee. I told you so... you'll marry an ang moh and live here". He said that 1 month after I met him. lol.

ah, I'm just so thankful for this friendship.. everything rolled out the way it did... cause of so so many factors. If I hadn't quarrel with my sister that year... if I hadn't cancel my Europe trip... if Ryan wasn't in town that week...if Joel's visa didn't have any problems and he didn't stay with Grace during his visit... I wouldn't have met him. And now? he's one of my closest friends and he has taught me so much about love, life and friendship.

I cannot wait for them to come over in less than 2 weeks!! I miss them so so much.

Side story-
I finally met Shane today. Shane is a researcher (I think) at UCB. And he's a friend of Amy's. Amy is my Shanghai jiejie. Amy basically acted as my big sister during my time in Shanghai when she didn't have to at all. She's one of my closest friends in Shanghai. Anyways... when she knew I intended to come here, she told Shane and I have been in contact with Shane since. He's been busy (he just got back from Hawaii on his honeymoon!!) so I only got to meet him today. He was really nice as promised by Amy... he brought me to this sandwich place... amazinggggggg. cheap and o-so-good.

And I took out my map so he circled and labelled all the good places to go in Berkeley.
Then he took out his pepper spray!!! He said to be careful around Shattuck... he was circling the corner on the map that wasn't very far from my apartment.
I was like...how dangerous is it exactly? Homeless people are just homeless. They may not be dangerous. I really don't like it when people say "beware of huge groups of black people" or "stay away from the homeless". Anyway... so yeah.. maybe I need to get a pepper spray. Apparently dangerous to him meant rapists and muggers. If I don't get to use it here, I'll bring it home to torture guys. hahah!

Another side story- warning, this part is heavy

For development psych class today I had to interview a classmate. It was an ingenious idea of the prof to give us an opportunity to make at least 1 friend in class. We were to ask our classmate a series of questions - like why choose Cal? What family background do you come from? What's your role in your family? If you could have dinner with one person- dead or alive, who would you pick and why? Where would you go for a 2-day all expense paid trip and why? What's your stumbling block to success?

So I know 3 other Singaporeans in this class and it was unspoken that the 4 of us would pair up to complete his assignment. But last night I was looking through the questions and I realised the whole point of the assignment was to explore the diversity in the student body. So I made a few calls and suggested the group to split up so we can get more out of this exercise. We did.
This morning we went to the lecture hall and waited for people to swap partners with us. I ended up interviewing this girl called Marne. She's awesome.
She's actually a working adult and she has returned for graduate school, and she's doing the course as a prerequisite for psych grad school. Her bachelor's is in social planning.
ding ding ding.
no relation to psychology! she only has to do 6 classes in psychology before she can go on to grad school.

That's something for me to think about...
long long time ago, in secondary school, when the 14 year olds would get together and ask each other what we wanted to do in the future... many of us in my group actually said psychology. I thought it was just a phase in life. but on hindsight, it was just that similar people get together. we just had similar interests and loved studying people. When it was time for me to enter uni, psychology or sociology never entered my mind. Not practical I thought. Maybe it was the influence of my parents. (I hate to admit it but what they say has so much influence on me. I just look up to them so much)

But last semester I did a career assessment test which analysed that my top 3 most suitable areas are
  1. psychology
  2. HR
  3. social work
Then it hit me... yeah, maybe I was built this way. I'm always intrigued by the differences amongst people. How people think, behave, how to relate to them etc. But alas, it's too late. I'm going onto my final year of university. Social Work would make my parents wallow and die in self-pity....
It will go something like this "ahhhhhh. I spent soooooooooo much money to put you through school, and this is what you wanna do. I know this matters very much to you. But you go work... have your business and then make lots of money... then you have a foundation and you have even more money to help those people. social work won't get you ANYWHERE. It's rubbish work, especially in Singapore. What, you wanna go to Africa?? Then you'll get malaria. Fall sick and die. Why do you want to do that to yourself???"
okay, maybe a little exaggerated. But you get my drift.

Anyway, I guess I'll have to ask myself how interested I really am in this field. It's not so impossible to attain a master's in Psychology after all. It's just 1 year to do the bachelor's coursework, then on to grad school.

Back to Marne. I know I digress a lot.
She works full time- is a director managing 70 people that looks into helping those impoverished children in the US and develops the school programme to cater to their needs, she's a part time student, has a partner and pets. She came from a broken family, and had to move like 4 times across the country in her youth as a result of that. It's complicated. I have so much respect for these people... they can be so strong.. so sensible despite all the hardship they have gone through. Sure, she didn't sleep on the streets. But divorce could be the worst thing a child has to go through..emotional support is so crucial for a young person. There were a couple of horrible horrible horrible occasions in my childhood that tore me up, and I got through it with my parents' help and support. I am privileged and lucky and I will never forget that.

After finding out about Marne's work, I just couldn't help but start discussing about the wretched system here in US. PROPERTY TAXES funds the schools here. So if you live in the rich neighbourhood with lotsa expensive property, your child's school will receive a lot more money as compared to the school in the ghetto. It's a vicious cycle. So how do you help the poor kids if you give them shitty resources?????
YES, their parents may be fucking lazy and therefore deserve to have nothing. they shouldn't even claim unemployment benefits. but the child is not mature enough to know the implications of living in this environment!!!!!!!!!!

shouldn't you let every single one start at the same point and reward them. equal benefits. equal rights. calling it socialist sounds extreme. but if anything opposite from individualism is labelled as socialist then so be it. Collectivism has it's benefits. And if the majority of Americans don't see it, the country will have itself to blame when the percentage of college graduates continue to fall.
Marne told me that for the first time, the percentage of college graduates in this generation is lower than the previous generation. This country is moving backwards.

I never thought much about Singapore's subsidy system. Our schools are subsidized.. Healthcare is subsidized. Poor people do get handouts. I don't know about unemployment benefits. There's workfare- but that is to reward those that do work. You see, they have to at least make the effort. I even felt that Singapore is not a good place for the poor. But now I think otherwise; America is nastier for poor people.

When I met Jonas in April, we were casually chatting about healthcare and education in his country. It's completely FREE. I never actually thought about the system in other countries. Shame on me, as an econs major. All I knew was... it was no good. It's bound to be inefficient. Taxes would be high. Workers would be underpaid. System would be inefficient and overused.

I did my research. Taxes are indeed high. But surprisingly, people weren't unhappy to pay. For college, they even received money while they're schooling. I'll liken that to pocket money from parents. Except for them, the parents pay the taxes, and the government gives the pocket money. Isn't that interesting? No matter how rich or poor your parents are, you can start on a clean slate; everything will depend on your hard work and brilliance.

The immediate thing I draw from this is
  1. Parents don't have to save for their children's future- education is a huge expenditure
  2. Will it affect the role of the family? So what is the parents' role in the development of their children?
Then I brought this up with my dad. He and I always talk about random stuff. I think we were talking about the different political systems and the impacts and how some countries managed to get away with being socialist and China's communist past yada yada.
He said socialist countries are bound for failure.
I'm not so sure.
But I am worried for the future generations of the socialist state. If you're brought up thinking, I have free healthcare, I don't need money for precautionary measures... the one day your government screws up and lose control of your country's funds, you'll be screwed too. Cause not only do you not have your own funds to use, you also lack the self-reliant mindset for those expenses that are traditionally paid for by the government.
My dad says that healthcare costs will only go up, especially with the ageing population. With the ageing population, you won't have enough tax revenue to cover the increment in spending to accommodate old people- in infrastructure, healthcare, pension.
So can you predict how long these systems can last for? Can you figure out why it can work for some countries but not for others? What are the differences in culture and values that make the system work or screw up?

I always knew America is all about the individual. But it isn't until today that I realise just how selfish this makes people. The rich person will say "well I worked hard."
How willing will you be to share your current wealth if you knew, in the next half of your life, it'll be your turn to be poor? How much would you share if you didn't know? And how much would you share if you knew you wouldn't ever be poor?

I am treading in dangerous waters

I am getting used to American size portions.
I am getting cravings for cookies and cakes.
I am not exercising (as usual but)
the MOST IMPORTANT THING IS....
I think I am getting FAT(ter).

Last year, I had Joel forcing me to exercise. And with him, we were always on a budget and eating out of a box. And when we eat out, he tends to eat more so I will have less than 1 portion. BUT now...

Actually I don't have any excuse. I will go back to cooking my own food. And hopefully, maybe... I will start running around the block. sigh.

Exhausting day

I had my human sexuality mid term exam this afternoon.
I wrote vasogestation instead of vasocongestion. I just couldn't remember the word!!!
And the other organ or gland that produces some rich nutrition for the sperm to travel up to fertilise the egg? I couldn't remember it either (& can't remember now too)... I just called it THE GLAND.
ya, Human Sexuality. Not so fun now.

I need to study freaking hard for my finals.

Development Psychology

For a change, I'll be blogging about my other module.
It's really fascinating to learn about Children's' development. There are many interesting facts that I've learnt and it really makes me wonder how much the children will benefit if ALL child care providers and primary school teachers were made to learn what I'm learning.

I learnt that children have different temperaments. And they were born with it, and will basically stick with it throughout their lives. There are 3 types. Flexible (Easy-going), Fearful (slow to warm) and Feisty(difficult)

50% of children are born easy-going. That means they are cheerful and adaptable, and they don't make a fuss but will still be able to show their needs to the child-care provider.
15% of children are the fearful type. They are timid and if pushed too quickly, end up withdrawing into their comfort zone. Familiarity is key for them and they need someone special and stable.
10% of kids are feisty. They are active, intense, irregular and easily distractable. They resist being rushed. If they don't get their way, they will be disruptive.

So we know that kids are naturally one way or the other... but it is common for adults to force or train their children to become obedient and they parent their kids in a way comfortable for themselves. I'm not saying that they are selfish cause all parents love their children so much. They just don't know they can do it even better.

Parents sometimes do things intentionally thinking they are helping their children, but it may not necessarily be the case. Pushing a fearful kid too quickly out of his/her comfort zone and disappearing may make it difficult for them to learn or trust in the future (I don't know the exact consequences but there really could be LT repercussions). And forcing the feisty kid to be quiet or take a timeout may not work at all.

Another thing we learnt is the Band of Arousal. This also lasts a lifetime. Some people were born with a narrow band of arousal... they can only function well with low levels of stimulation. Some were born the opposite. The stimulation can come from the artwork hung on the wall, the colour of the walls, the music in the background, the people talking to you, people jumping and dancing around etc. If you put someone in a highly stimulated environment, and the person has a narrow band of arousal, it won't be the optimal environment for learning.

Of course, as we grow older, we learn that we can't control our environment... so you may argue that it's good to let the kid learn from young. But I feel they may not be developed enough to grapple with all the less than optimal conditions. People mature and become wiser... the fearful kid will learn to adjust to survive in this competitive world. They still have a degree of control. For example, if they fear change and fear new environments, they can choose routine work.

People are indeed built differently. Since they have no control over WHO they are, they can only control HOW they behave.

Gilroy Factory Outlet & Wine Country!

Right, so although the title of today's post is the above, I have to start on the ever so popular topic of interest, my human sexuality class.

Today, Sean, Adeline, Shirlene and I took the tour up to Wine Country, and we met this Argentinian lady who is a professor back in Mexico, and like us, is spending her summer in Berkeley, only she's doing research on International relations. We had lunch with her and she was making conversation with me..

her: So, what subjects are in taking in Berkeley?
me: Dev psychology and human sexuality.
her: ahhhhhhh? that's interesting! what are you learning?
me: (I repeat the usual stuff)
her: I imagine there are a lot of differences since Berkeley is so diverse and the culture makes a lot of difference as to how we deal with this issue.
yada yada.

It's a great conversational topic. ok.

You know how when you're a freshman, when you meet new people in school, you'll ask "so which jc were you from??" Here, we ask "so what subjects are you doing in Berkeley?"
On thursday night at Kip's, I was sitting next to this guy(Jon's friend), Kevin and he turns to me to ask me that question. At that point I didn't even know his name. So I answered the USUAL. boring. And obviously he's intrigued.
then I went on... "oh, we watched a video today. on breasts and penises"
I swear sometimes I don't think before I speak.

[side note: Maybe it was exam stress but I completely lost it with one of my professors last semester because my brain goes crazy sometimes. My prof likes sending us long conversational-style emails with a lot of unnecessary details. On our group project submission, he wrote something like " I love you but please do not swamp before class to submit your project". That was like the third time he said he loved us. So I got semi-annoyed and crossed at that instant and I REPLIED.
"Dear Prof,
With all due respect, how do you love us when you don't even know us"
Mistake. I regretted it for sure. But you know, he's nice. I don't think he took away marks for my lack of tack. He even wrote back and explained it was meant as a joke. And explained how Americans used the term loosely. ]

ok, back to Kevin.
So we were talking about boobs and penises before we knew each other's names. LOL.
I think he was stunned momentarily then he asked if we just used those terms freely in class... Apparently he's from Holland. And it's so free and open there so it shouldn't have been a problem. He's Asian though.. I don't know the story. He knows like a million languages. He started speaking Bahasa Indonesia midway through the night!
After talking about boobs, he asked what I wanted to do after graduation. It was probably just an ice breaker I know... but I absolutely hate this question. I'm still stumped. I'm finding my way... but still so unsure. And it doesn't help when you are asked this by a cute high-flying-semi-stranger. just kidding. ok, i'm not kidding. he is cute.
but that's not why i hate the question.

The guy is intense. He has graduated and is going to work for Morgan Stanley in August, yet he's still doing 8credits worth of courses in UCB. Before coming here he went backpacking for dunno how many months.. went to so many places I can't remember (NZ was one of them) and he went to Shanghai too...to study CHINESE. yeah, in 10 seconds, we were raving about muse and bar rouge. How the hell can Kip's compare. meh. haha!

BACK TO TOPIC

oh, so Gilroy prices are very very cheap... the sisters bought 2 coach bags and a purse for 200usd. Ninewest shoes were really cheap too... one was so gorgeous and comfortable but I managed to resist the urge to buy. I must say I did excellent that day... I did NOT swipe the credit card at all!!!! mind you, I was not carrying a lot of cash at all.

Today we went up north to Wine Country... at last!!!
Tried like 20 types of wine maybe. I bought 2 bottles. 1 for my dad and 1 for my ahma. yes, my ahma drinks wine. I bought her the muscat. haha. How will I bring it home? I'll decide later.

ok, i'm freaking tired! peaceout.

Six degrees of separation

Last night was my first night out at a bar in Berkeley!

Last week, I spotted some Singaporeans in my Dev Psych class, and this week I managed to get hold of them, and we went for lunch. Adeline and Shirlene are sisters, and they met Sean at Orientation... since then they have been hanging out tog quite often. So yesterday was the first time I hung out with them.... and suddenly they were inviting me to go to the factory outlet with them(we're renting a car and driving down later!) and we're going to napa valley (tomorrow). Like Napa Valley is the second thing on my to-do list! First is sky-diving, which is reserved for Joel's birthday celebration!

I met the 3 of them for dinner again. We went to the canteen the hall people go to... and coincidentally I met Frank, Pocket, Justin and Dai lin. And we met some other Singaporeans that Sean got to know in hall...so by 11pm, I'm at the bar with all these people. And Frank hangs out with Pocket... Pocket is very sociable...and she knows Jon(this other Singaporean who knows Sean)... and Sean's tennis friend is in my human sexuality class.... and
not to mention, Adeline and Shirlene used to be neighbours with Zhenghan (my old tennis khaki).

The world is so small. haha :)

SF carnaval 2010

I know this video is coming up a little late... but at least there's one! Enjoy it's great :)

Second week of class

Today was the fourth lesson of Human Sexuality class.
There are 3 days of classes every week, but Thursday is film day and optional. I went for last week's film, it was on the history of sex. Should have been interesting but I totally fell asleep... and I hardly saw any of my classmates. hahah

Anyway, so far we learnt about the male and female system, and the reproductive system. Today I watched a video of the sperms swimming up the the egg. It was a video of the system... yeah... pretty amazing.. It's amazing how one even gets pregnant. Like the sperm has to go through so many barriers just to fertilise the egg. And after the fertilisation, a series of changes will take place and try to lodge itself into the uterus of the woman. So many things can go wrong. really so so so so many things can go wrong. That's why life is so amazing. What more can you ask for than a healthy baby?

So, my prof showed us another very VERY explicit video today. On childbirth.
I saw the baby's head stick out of the woman's vagina.
OH. MY. GOD.
So bloody scary.
Then the baby's shoulders came out... suddenly the arms are dangling out and the baby starts swinging its arms... the doctor pulled the whole baby out and then Whoosh and huge splash of fluid came out of the now huge vaginal opening (birth canal) and the class went UHHHHHHHH.

Kudos to mothers.

We had our first discussion group (DG) today. I was nervous about this cause I thought it'd be in front of the whole lecture group... but the DG was literally just a group discussion! Like we went back to our groups and discussed the topic of the day. Today's was about culture and society values on human sexuality. My classmate asked how the situation is in Singapore... and I said it's still quite conservative and definitely not as sexually open as US. One of them asked if our perception of US through it's media is that it is a sex-crazed society. We talked about spring break craziness and the friends-with-benefits phenom and religious influence blahblah. I'm really puzzled as to how US got so focused on sexual related stuff. I mean once upon a time, their women wore clothes up to the necks, and skirts up the floor, and they were labelled as prudes!!!
What happened?
Is it fair to say the capitalists saw the weakness in man(as in homosapiens...) and that sex sells so they made use of it to start a whole new culture? I don't know.

My classmate said that people really need to start caring about other more important issues, and it doesn't help that the media focuses on celebrities and their fake boobs. As a foreigner, that is what I see too... but I'm afraid to stereotype and make a sweeping statement. I feel that Americans need to take a step back and look at their lives, especially those that wake up every morning thinking
guys: I'm da man! damn, look at those muscles. i'm gonna get myself some chicks.
girls: oh, my boobs look perrrrfect. purr.
lol. ok, i feel like so bitchy typing that! but you get my drift...i wish they'd get some enlightenment!

Never mind that people want big boobs, tiny waist and no wrinkles. Just be balanced ya know. Like, don't be like Heidi Montag ( I know I know... not many people end up like that) but it just shows how screwed up the culture is!!! I think it's ok to do some procedures in order to make you more confident... but becoming obsessed with your appearance is just so unhealthy! But the question is ... where do you draw the line? Why don't plastic surgeons have moral standards and advise their patients accordingly??

This is such a huge culture problem. Promiscuity. Over emphasis on appearance. Rising divorce rates. Broken families. Screwed up children. Screwed up future.

This is called japalang dinner

I had the last portion of beef stew/soup for lunch today... (yay time to change the menu for me again :)) I was starving and I was trying to decide if I should get takeaway or buy something at the nearby store to add to my scraps of food at home for dinner. I did the latter. I bought a packet of franks for 2.99usd.
This was what I had in the fridge:
Celery, baby carrots, 7 eggs, half a bottle of prego sauce, 1 serving of cooked spaghetti.

I boiled my celery and carrots till cooked. I fried the newly bought franks with prego sauce, I cracked in an egg.. then add in the cooked celery and carrots, and tossed it with the cooked spaghetti. Wala..
It's edible. Although I don't know what kind of pasta this is. lol

Fooooooood

I was having cravings today.... and I remember there's a nice little bakery on Telegraph ave so after class I went there to get me some pastries! I'm not a doughnut person, but I couldn't resist getting one when there are sooooo many ginormous doughnuts and muffins staring at me from the refrigerator!
I was gobbling it up when I remembered Jingwei's request! haha
so here goes.
just a normal glazed doughnut. soooo good.
and i must say more satisfying than krispy kreme cause of its sheer size!
the only time i welcome american-sized portions is when it comes to cakes and desserts :)

blueberry muffin

orange poppy seed muffin

3 items= 4 bucks.

And this is the dish of the WEEK. lol.
Beef stew/soup.
I just fried onions till it caramelized, then added the beef, celery, sweet potatoes (should add it later though) and beef broth and covered it in water. Add the carrots after 1 hour.

No one ever adds sweet potatoes into stews, but I thought it was more healthy and sweeter than potatoes. so yeah..

On Saturday, I went to the Berkeley Farmer's Market. It's on Center Street. Opens from 10am-3pm. It's so cool. It's so makeshift. Like the owner's lorry or vehicle would be parked right behind the tables, and they sometimes have more stock in the vehicle. The whole vibe is just very hippie-ish. All the organic produce, and independent stalls. Very refreshing. :) It brightened my Saturday.
